What Is the Goal of a Social Media Platform?

The goal of a social media platform would be for people to be able to express themselves and share ideas and information with each other. Anything that smacks of what aristotle called argumenta mad baculum, the appeal to the walking stick, is not part of a productive conversation. The most active way to allow this? Is it to ban all hate speech from discussions? Or is it perhaps, to allow that speech and also allow counter speech? That's at least the argument of nating strasson. i believe in offering a filter that a user can choose to have on or have off, that could filter out certain types of speech that they don't want to see in their feed
