The self does really matter for the Rhineland mystics who impact Luther. The self also can be so devious that it can make itself into God in a certain way and can become ultimately important. For them, there's something about getting yourself to the ground and realizing that you are that there's a nothingness within you. Inside of that encounter with the ground of nothingness that you find God, you find God inside the nothingness.
