Finding the neural correlates of consciousness or NCCs has all sorts of practical consequences and clinical consequences. For instance, if you had the neural correlate of consciousness, you could find in patients that are behavioral and responsive. So clinically and practically having these correlates would sort of signal a lot of progress.
Twenty-five years ago in a German bar, neuroscientist Christof Koch bet philosopher David Chalmers that we’d understand the neural basis for consciousness by 2023.
