Introduction

The rivalry between the stoics and sceptics ran for generations. Cicero wrote treatises on all of these subjects, devoting a work called the academica to the topic of scepticism. In the generations leading up to cicero's day, plato's academy in athens had become synonymous with the sceptical approach to philosophy. That certainly would have surprised the first heads of the academy following plato's death.
