"I think that the way Jesus is talking about forgiveness is inviting us to reconceive justice at a foundational level," he says. "If you harm me in order for things to be equal again, you must be harmed." The Lex Talionis comes out of the Hebrew Bible and it suggests an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, a stripe for stripe, life for life. It's actually a beautiful law because it does say we are equal.
