Harry Haywood was a black nationalist, but not in the way that the nation of Islam are black nationalists. He did not filter his understandings of black liberation through any religious mythology. Malcolm X rose to prominence as perhaps the major voice of militant black nationalism in the country. It wasn't until later in life that he began to at least see the contours of what socialism could offer his movement.
