The Storage Engine Is a Big Key Value Storage Engine

CockroachDB uses reference counting on itself. Each replica has got, you can imagine like level DB or rock, it's a big LSM tree. We did our own storage engine and there were a lot of reasons for that. It's hard to find these days, storage engines that are super memory efficient. Because we're doing static allocation, we can do with just a few hundred megas of RAM.
