The Three Rules of Modern Storytelling

To be successful, to be popular, you need to mix anywhere from two to four genres. If each genre has 15 to 20 major plot beats and you mix two or three, you're going from say 15 to 45 plot beats in the same two hour film or in the same 300 page novel. And what I have found, especially over the last five years, is that what separates the top 1% of writers from everybody else is the ability to express complex plot. Most people don't know how to do it.
