More than a hundred men died on their watch. State prison reports say some were crushed by falling rock, some were electrocuted. Other prisoners were killed while trying to escape. The company did end its contracts for convict labor in 19 12 - 16 years before alabama became the last state to outlaw the practice. But us steel didn't stop leasing prisoners by choice. It only stopped because they were outmanoeuvered and other companies successfully won those contracts that boxed them out.
