The Life and Times of Carlo Bonaparte
Carlo and Latizio Bonaparte were married in 1764, near the zenith of Paoli's rule. Less than a year later, French troops began to arrive on the island. After his defeat at Ponte Novu, Paoli and a small entourage bordered a ship bound for exile. As Paoli's personal secretary, there was a place on that ship for Carlo Bonaparte but he chose to stay in Corsica.
