The researchers say that paring the words makes it a bit easier to tease this out. So you can still think about the word that you're shown, you just don't have to recall the paired word. And so what they found was that 350 milla seconds after seeing the red light, the brain region known for managing attention sent the signal to another brain area involved in working memory.
