We Can't Really Know What Our Ancestors Were Doing
Up until about forty thousand b c or so, himo sapians were sharing the earth and interacting with our now extinct human cousins. And the result probably would have struck a modern observer as something more akin to a world inhabited by hobbits, giants and elves than anything we have direct experience of today. There's only so much you can reconstruct from cranial remains and the occasional piece of napped flint. It seems reasonable to assume that behaviors like mating and child rearing practices must have varied at least as much as physical types.
