There's an effect in both groups, but that effect is much larger if a kid has a birthday. I think the cleverness here is that we don't see people celebrating. You just cuse the birthday as indicator of the party. This is an area where i think economics, physicians, epidemiologists could have gotten together and forgot how to answer these questions outside of a randomized trial.
