The Rise and Fall of Avdu'l

Muhammad al-Du was the Mufti of Egypt in late 19th century. He and his mentor Jamal al-Adin al-Afrani were reformists who opposed colonialist power. Avdu'l left Egypt when British invaded in 1882, but later returned to promote a reformist agenda. For Abdu'l, political reform and religious commitments went hand-in-hand.
