The Rubella vaccine was developed in 1966. By 1972, 75% of all school children had been immunized against the disease. Over the next few decades, massive vaccination campaigns decreased the global prevalence of rubella and congenital rubella syndrome dramatically. It was eliminated in the US in 2004 but lapsed vaccination rates has led to rubella continuing to be a huge problem around the world.
