The Normans and the Key to England
William the Conqueror built one of his first castles in England. It lies about 50 miles east northeast of here and is known as the Key to England. From around 1179 to 1189, only a hundred years after Norman Conquest, Henry II spent a fortune building up this castle. He turned what had been an Anglo-Saxon defensive structure into a palatial hilltop residence and stronghold. In the 12th century that meant over castle was the place to be seen. The Lord and Lady of a castle, the king and queen if they were here, would they've been rubbing shoulders? Everyone or would the big official spaces have been kept clear for them and the servants were rebedding
