The Origins of Hellenism

Hellenism referred to a synthesis of Greco-Roman culture. It encompassed literature, religion and politics with special reference to the Greek city-state. While Greek language and literature form the basis of transmission Greek ethnicity was really not a factor Hellenes were made not born. The prestige of certain places like Athens retained a conceptual primacy long after their actual importance had waned.
