Some fish had mutations that allowed them to survive better in these polluted, toxic environments. And Andrew and his team could actually see this when they looked at the genomes of these killy fish. Figuring out how the killy fish were able to evolve to deal with this pollution is important to help answer a bigger question: why are most other vertebrates not able to do this?
