The sounds of these orchestras are determined by the players themselves, but with a heavy dose of interpretation by the conductor. The most effective conductors combine both technical advice and imagery. A hundred individuals subjugate their own individual ideas in order to follow the ideas of one person. When it's not working obviously things are much more difficult. Some musicians only want to hear the basic louder, softer, slower, or faster. Others want to understand the history of the piece. And of course there will be those who disagree,. But an orchestra is actually a remarkable organism of goodwill in the right hands.
