The two armies met on the 20 fifth of january. More than a thousand royalists were taken prisoner, with at least 200 killedur the setting sun had been the only thing which prevented further losses. The newly arrived irish regiments so recently returned from fighting the confederates collapsed adding insult to injury. Plenty of those troops captured or surrendered defected to parliament, swearing the solemn league and covenant. Charles had signed the cessation at the price of protestant resentment in order to get these men back into england. Now, partly because of that cessation, those soldiers would fight against the king.
