Terror management theory is the idea that we have a self-preservation instinct within us to stay alive. People invent ideas to give themselves a sense of immortality, most obviously in religion but also in things like the creation of the nation or engaging in the arts. Ernest Becka's famous book The Denyal of Death is the origin of this kind of thought.
