Is There a Connection Between Gorbachev's Failures and Putin's Regime?

Gorbachev is the last public political figure who has a direct connection, I suppose, to the Russian Revolution and its failure. He was supposedly kind of seeking to reform the USSR in a democratic direction, but required, could only rely upon the decayed remnants of the hostile and suspicious political party. Gorbachev's efforts at the end of the Cold War ended up undermining the power which he needed to affect the changes that he wanted to affect. And so we can try to puncture this Western narrative on Gorbachev by spelling out what we just want to say about him.
