Many of thes african captives already knew at least some portuguese. They might be able to communicate with the spanish colonizers through a sort of shared pigeon language. Some of them were already roman catholic, especially those coming from angola. And they had skills in building or navigating or different kinds of farming and s there was such a lack of people, there was a tremendous demand for workers. But that was not the main line of work. More of them had to learn and practise skilled crafts like carpentry or metal working,. Or they had to learn ranching, which also is a complex skill unto itself.
