Tiberius and the Augusta

During the early years of Tiberius' reign, there seems to have been a cordial, if distant relationship between mother and son. But she also exuded a sort of omnipresence that began to wear on Tiberius. Almost all the ancient sources agree that when Tiberius withdrew from Rome in 26 AD, it was at least in part to get away from his overbearing mother. When she finally died in 29 AD, he claimed that he was too busy with work to return to Rome for her funeral.
