Teddy Roosevelt appointed John Wallace as chief engineer of the Panama Canal in June, 1905. The canal's 3,500-strong workforce was plagued by malaria and yellow fever. In August 1906, Teddy stops digging for a time to focus on health issues. He turns much of his attention to restoring the French-neglected railway along the isthmus.
