The Space Time Metric
Each point on the hair band only goes through one ruler which is represented as the space of possible rulers. Each point on the band intersects exactly one point on the tube. The line along that tube is the choice of all possible rulers. We knew about rulers, we knew about protractors but we don't have a model in which that is a periscope. That is effectively the new use of the space time metric.
