There was a theory put forward by Kalutza, whether he was German or Polish depends on. He proposed this wonderful idea in which you had a curved space time. And the gravitational field was encapsulated in the curvature of this space time. So people say, well, five dimensions is good, why not higher than dimensions? But there's a key point here and that is that in Kalutza's theory, you needed to have a symmetry.
