Alexis Madrigal: We're talking with Andrew Alden, author of a fantastic new book called Deep Oakland. He explains how geology shaped the city and why it is where it is today. The sandscape of Oakland really underlies downtown Oakland and geologists call Merit Sand. It's distinctive, it's the only thing like it in the whole East Bay. So when the founders of Oakland were rolling around the bay looking for places to claim land and found cities, they spotted this platform.
