Pulse oximeters work by emitting two different wavelengths of light, red and infrared. Because of the tight mass seal, they are contraindicated in patients with decreased level of consciousness due to the risk of aspiration. The choice of the oxygen device will ultimately depend on the clinical context, patient presentation, and progression of symptoms. Time for a medicine minute.
