The Trans-Alaska Pipeline
Exxon joined with seven other oil companies to form the Aliasca pipeline service company. This consortium planned to build an enormous pipeline across Alaska. The Trans-Alaska pipeline system would carry petroleum 800 miles from where it was extracted in the freezing north Down to a new terminal and port on the south coast. There super tankers could be loaded with oil and sent off on the five-day journey to refineries in California. Joe Hazelwood had risen quickly through the ranks of Exxon but his reputation as a drinker was growing just as fast as his reputation for sailing.
