The word pageant was borrowed from latin and french, but the original meaning of the word is disputed. The church started to embrace the art form as a way to teach people about the bible. Certain stories from the bible were sometimes acted out for congregations. And on certain special holidays, the local craft guilds would perform them. Those plays became known as mystery plays.
