The FBI's Operation Ironside
Operation Ironside was an operation run by global intelligence agencies which has seen well over 100 organised crime members charged. The FBI recruited a collaborator who was developing a next-generation secure messaging platform for the criminal underworld called A-NOM. This collaborator designed the system so that any message sent was also copied to the intelligence agency. At Exeter Crown Court 33-year-old Andrew Cole admitted a range in the carriage of controlled goods. He and four other members of the crew all denied the charge claiming they were unaware of the cargo. They were all cleared of drug smuggling at a trial at Plymouth Crown Court.
