Hitchcock considered these to be moral lessons but they seemed to lack any sense of proportion. Spotty's depiction of his life makes that very clear. Other Hitchcockian mischief inflicted some real inconvenience or embarrassment on the victims for no particular reason. A featured actress received 400 smoked herring for a birthday present and had the unpleasant task of deciding how to dispose of what was left after two days living with an all-pervasive odor. He brought in aspiring actors as waiters, one to each guest and instructed them to serve with a Pauling rudeness and incivility.
