The Dancer Is a Symbol of Visual and Racialized Beauty
The idea that one can hear cast and one can hear race is perhaps not a difficult thing for us the three of us to consider. I found myself falling down a rabbit hole when it came to thinking about language and immigration because I found all of this. One of my big fights over the years has been getting ethnomusicologists based in the United States to listen to dance and understand that dancers are musicians too. It's really at moments driven me a little insane and I'm still working on it but in the book I definitely point to this like the sorts of sounds like timbre I talked to I talk about genres of music and different types of music.
