The Fear of the Truth

Populists today appeal to people who fear they have lost their livelihoods. They present themselves as strong men leaders who can restore order from chaos. Back in the 1920s, populism spurred the emergence of the Soviet Union. The fear that authoritarianism could also take root in the United States inspired George Orwell's novel, 1984.
