Lewis says that no man knows how bad he is until he really tries to be good. You're getting an A for trying and that's what God's actually focusing on. But if you're objectively measuring yourself on your actual achievement, you're not even close. If you give into a temptation after five minutes, you won't know what it would have been like in an hour or two. It's a lot easier just to say I didn't try.
