Adolf Hitler was born on the 20th of April 1889 in Brownau-Armin, a small town in modern day Austria. His parents came from poor peasant backgrounds but lived a comfortable middle-class existence. He had a tense relationship with his father who wanted him to follow in his footsteps and become a civil servant. But when he was 13 years old, his mother allowed him to change schools and forget about a career in the civil service. The young Hitler moved to art school and began to think of himself as an artist.
