Freemasonry and the Inquisition
The papacy officially condemns freemasonry in 17 38. This means that from that point onward, it is officially subject to the jurisdiction of the inquisition. In all catholic countries, by 17 forty it is formally illegal. Once freemasonry makes certain inroads, it can only spread and survive by recruiting people who are willing to break the law or flout ecclesiastical bands. And so it had to seek out much more oppositional and dissodent networks. So freemasonry pretty quickly takes on a of radical and even subversive character.
