The surgeon removed the hippocampus on both sides. A h m was no longer able to form any new memories of episodes that had occurred in his life after that point. Ah, he did retain some kinds of memory, but he wasn't able to remember things like, ah, oh, yes, i went to the grocery store yesterday.
