Hataiyama Kunio became an aide for Tanaka Kakue against his father's wishes. His wife, Takami Emily, a half-Australian, half-Japanese TV announcer, knew so little about politics that in her first interview she accidentally endorsed the Japanese Communist Party instead of Kunio's LDP. Both sons benefited from the patronage of their mother, Hatoyama Yasuko,.
