The film is set in the days leading up to the signing of the Armistice on November 11th 1918. It was important for us to explain that the end of World War I wasn't the end of the war, it was also the beginning of World War II. The character Matthias Aotzberger who signed the Armistices was sort of a devout Catholic and pacifist. He wanted to end the war. And he was being called a traitor almost immediately after the signature of the armistice traitor.
