Paul newman is chief scientist for earth science at the nassa goddard spae flight center just outside washington, d c. His first job was to study gases called c f cs. In the late 19 twenties, a scientist named thomas midgley figured out that you could use c f c as a carrier gas for air conditioning and refrigeration. Paul joined nassa right when jonathan shanklin was doing his work in cambridge. He wants more information before telling the world that the bit of the sky that protects people from cancer is disappearing.
