What Is the Difference Between First Principles and Approximations?

Newton came up with these equations by going through all the data collected by Galileo. He tried to fit it to the data by being better, not carefully, tailor the equations till they sort of match what the data says. So I think that's what the contrast here is between where do you start from first principles or from a ton of data? Yeah. Newton is a through and through empiricism.
