The Importance of Predicting the Second Coming of Christ

In Mark 1330, Jesus says, truly I say to you, this generation will not pass away before all these things take place. This verse unexpectedly seems to suggest that Jesus thought that his return was going to happen within the lifetime of his listeners. Look also at Mark 8, verse 38 to Mark 9 and verse 1. Here again it seems in this verse that Jesus is saying that there are people listening to him who will experience the coming of the Son of Man in glory and power. How do we deal with this?
