The Son of Man and Mark's Gospel
In Mark's gospel, Jesus is going around healing a bunch of people. He really is this powerful king. As soon as Peter makes his confession, it shifts. And he starts talking about how the son of man has to be rejected and suffer and die and rise again after three days. That's the tension that pervades the book,. The authority that Jesus has as king and yet the fact that he can only fully come into his kingship by way of the cross. But while the gospel is redefining Messiah's ship, it's simultaneously attempting to show us what powerful, faithful, human participation in the reign of God looks like.
