The Rise of the Riot Girl Movement
There were hundreds of riot girl fanzines with names like Wiglet, Quit whining, and girl germs. This was all happening at a time when traditional feminism was considered by some as undesirable and inaccessible. The media pigeonholed them as combat-bootwearing man haters, angry rape and incest survivors, former sex workers, and caricatures of girlhood. Despite its short lifespan, the Riot Girl movement had a major impact on 90s music leading to the rise of musicians like Alanis Morissette, Paula Cole, and Lisa Loeb.
