The Rise of the Hayakian Marketplace

The rise of the labor movement was a classic Polanyan reaction to the working out of the Hayakian marketplace. By 1870, we had steam power society, in which it's pretty clear that it was not any one person who was productive, but the system as a whole organized around the steam engine. That form of the economy then disappeared between 1870 and 1910. With it, I suppose hopes for hopes for a very dominant labor movement leading some kind of socialist revolution.
