The deep sea is a huge part of the earth system, and there are many aspects of it which interact with the rest of the planet. It's the biggest carbon store on earth by orders of magnitude. And also that the food webs are connected from the surface to the deep ocean. We didn't know these places were there till forty years ago, and we were getting on just fine without them.
