CHAPTER

Socratic Irony in the Phaedrus

The phaedrus is one of the most difficult dialogues, perhaps even more so. Socrates attacks not just writing, as he did in the phaedrus, but also poetry. He compares giving some one the truth when they can't handle the truth to a dangerous weapon. So it's especially bad when you dramatize not just different points of view, but emotions and things like that. The real goal of this is not for you to accept what socrates says, but be one of the people who sees through the lies on his behalf.
