Introduction

Napoleon Bonaparte was born on the Mediterranean island of Corsica in 1769. He left home at age 9 to attend a military school in France. In 1785, he was commissioned an officer in the Army of the King of France. Napoleon rose to national prominence in 1795 as commander of pro-government forces during a royalist uprising that nearly toppled the republican government.
